Cougar Soccer Club is excited to announce the return of its Boys High School Program with the formation of a new U15 team for the 2026-27 season.
The team, open to players born on or after August 1, 2011, marks an important milestone for the club as it reconnects with the vision that inspired Cougar's founding more than 60 years ago.
Founded in 1965 by legendary Columbia High School coach Gene Chyzowych, Cougar Soccer Club was originally created to provide additional training and competitive opportunities for his Columbia High School players outside of the school season. Over the decades, Cougar became a cornerstone of youth soccer in Maplewood and South Orange, helping thousands of players develop their skills, compete at a high level, and build a lifelong love of the game.
While Cougar's high school-age teams were paused during the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the club is proud to bring them back and continue the tradition established by Coach Chyzowych.
"This program represents a return to our roots," said Danny Smith, head coach of the U15 team. "Gene Chyzowych founded Cougar to give dedicated players opportunities to continue developing beyond their school seasons. Bringing back our high school teams allows us to continue that mission for today's generation of athletes."
Built on a Championship Foundation
The foundation of the new team is Cougar's NCSA Cup Champion 2012 Boys team, a group that has enjoyed tremendous success while developing within the Cougar system.
The club is now seeking additional players to complement that core and complete the roster.
Importantly, the program is open to all eligible players regardless of which high school they attend. Whether players attend Columbia High School, another public school, or a private school, all are welcome to express interest and be evaluated.
A Flexible Model Designed Around High School Soccer
The program is specifically structured to complement, not compete with, the high school soccer experience.
During the fall, the team will compete in weekend league matches that do not conflict with high school training and game schedules. This allows players to represent their school teams while continuing to compete in a club environment.
Once the high school season concludes, players will return to regular Cougar training under the guidance of our professional coaching staff. Winter training sessions will focus on technical development, fitness, and preparation for the spring club season, helping players continue their growth and development year-round.
This model provides players with the best of both worlds: the opportunity to compete for their high schools while also benefiting from professional club coaching and a structured pathway for continued improvement.
Professional Coaching Without the High Cost
The Boys High School Program was created to provide local players with a high-quality, affordable alternative to many of the region's larger and more expensive club programs.
Players will receive professional coaching focused on technical development, tactical understanding, fitness, and preparation for both high school and club competition. The program offers a competitive environment while remaining true to Cougar Soccer Club's community-focused, nonprofit mission.
