Saturday, June 6, 2026, will forever be etched into Cougar folklore. On a warm spring afternoon, this remarkable group of boys roared their way to NCSA Commissioners Cup glory, becoming only the second Cougar team on record to lift the famous trophy.
On a field so large it seemed to need its own ZIP code, the Cougars lined up ready for the challenge ahead. From the opening whistle, New Milford made their intentions clear, repeatedly looking to release their lightning-fast striker through the middle.
Eight minutes in, their plan paid off. A perfectly timed run beat the offside trap and New Milford took a 1-0 lead.
If they thought it would be smooth sailing from there, they clearly hadn't read the Cougar handbook.
These boys don't quit. They simply sharpen their claws.
Tactical adjustments soon settled the game. Augie, JJ and captain Henry stood tall in defense, helping keep New Milford at bay while the midfield fought to establish the passing rhythm that has defined this team all season. Chances began to come for Max and Mason, but the equalizer remained elusive.
Then came the first chapter of what would become The James Show.
Just before halftime, James raced from his box and bravely threw himself in front of an advancing attacker. The referee produced a yellow card and awarded a free kick, but the resulting effort sailed harmlessly over the bar. It was a smart, selfless piece of goalkeeping that ensured the Cougars headed into the break facing just a one-goal deficit.
The halftime message was simple:
Use the width. Trust the passing game. Keep probing.
The boys responded brilliantly.
Matai, Ryan, Alex and Smitty all came close as the Cougars steadily tightened their grip on the match. As the final 20 minutes approached, Cougar fitness began to tell. While New Milford tried to slow the tempo, the Cougars kept hunting in packs.
Their reward finally arrived in the 68th minute.
Augie unleashed an absolute thunderbolt from nearly 40 yards. The ball crashed off the underside of the crossbar and over the line. It wasn't just an equalizer. It was an unforgettable strike that sent the Cougar faithful into raptures.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Cougars pushed relentlessly for a winner. Hudson, Owen, Jonny and Justin injected pace, power and energy, while Joe and Miles surged forward from defense to keep New Milford pinned back.
By the final whistle, there looked to be only one team likely to win it.
But extra time beckoned.
The Cougars continued to create the better chances, yet in the dying moments New Milford broke through and seemed destined to steal victory. Once again, James had other ideas.
Charging from his line, he threw himself at the attacker's feet to produce a magnificent save and keep Cougar dreams alive.
Penalties.
But this team had prepared for this moment. They had practiced. They believed.
New Milford: 1-0
Zach: 1-1 (plus an unforgettable high-five for the referee)
New Milford: 2-1
Mason: 2-2
New Milford: 3-2
Smitty: 3-3
Then, with nerves jangling, James flew to his right to produce a stunning save.
New Milford miss: 3-3
Owen: 4-3
New Milford: 4-4
Up stepped Max with the chance to write his name into Cougar history.
He needed no second invitation.
Cool, composed and clinical, he buried the decisive penalty to make it 5-4.
Players sprinted in celebration. Parents erupted. Coaches embraced. Fans cheered.
The NCSA Commissioners Cup was heading home to SOMA.
For many of these boys, this moment was six years in the making. Through countless practices, victories, disappointments and unforgettable memories, they stuck together, grew together and ultimately became champions together.
This was about far more than winning a trophy.
It was about teamwork. Resilience. Friendship. Belief.
The Cougars didn't just win the cup.
They proved that when adversity comes knocking, this pride always finds a way to roar louder.
Cougars rule supreme.

The NCSA Commissioners Cup proved to be a memorable tournament across Cougar Soccer Club. The U9 Boys Red team put together an outstanding run to the championship match before falling to Belleville in the final, while the U11 Boys Red team advanced all the way to the semifinals.
Congratulations to all three Cougar teams for representing the club with pride, determination and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
This was the first season Cougar Soccer Club placed two teams in the Cup final. The U11 Boys were the first Cougar team to reach the final twice, previously qualifying as U9 players. The 2012 U14 Boys are the second Cup champion in club history -- matching the 2011 Boys who won the Cup as U11 players in 2022.
